19 months old with horrible food allergies
Our son was born in Sept. 2007 with gastroschisis. His surgery went great, and he was home within one month. He had no problems with blockage or even vomiting, and we thought we were home-free… until we introduced solid foods into his diet (he was exclusively breastfed for 6 months). He has increasingly gotten worse… he has SEVERE reactions to dairy, even the slightest residue, and he has become so incredibly sensitive to almost everything he eats. He has constant eczema, his eyes are chapped all around the lids and are red and itchy, and he has constant nasal congestion. We’ve limited his diet for the past year to rice, chicken, squash, sweet potatoes, blueberries and bananas… recently he can’t even tolerate that much variety and we’ve limited him to rice and chicken. I’m SOOOO frustrated and don’t know what to do for him! What tests should we have done on him? What could be wrong? He is miserable. We’re really trying to go the natural route, and his doctor is supporting us, but she’s not a gastroschisis specialist or anything… she’s just doing the best she can. Does anyone have any experience similar to this with their toddler or older gastroschisis survivors? Any advice? I’m desperate… I want my child to be able to EAT and to gain weight. He’s only 20 lbs at 19 months old.
