My rollercoaster of an experience

Hello,

My name is lynn, I’m 21 and I am 25 weeks pregnant. I found out at my first ultrasound (21 weeks) that my baby had gastroschisis. I was referred to a really awesome medical center in Seattle, and I had my first appointment there for further ultrasounds and testing yesterday. During that ultrasound i found out my baby was a boy (yay!) But I also found out some more bad news.  My baby also has transposition of the great vessels of the heart, which means the vessel that is supposed to pump blood throughout the body, pumps blood to the lungs and the vessel that is supposed to pump to the lungs, pumps to the body.  The baby is fine in the womb but will need surgery as soon as it is born, just like gastroschisis. Because they found this condition along with the gastroschisis, the doctor wanted to do chromosome testing on me. ( They had to stick a needle through my belly into my uterus to pull out amniotic fluid…OUCH!) The doctor said since these two conditions are together, it might not be gastroschisis, but omphalocele, which is much worse and also goes along with other disabilities. I am so devastated that my little boy has so many problems, but the doctor said shes almost positive it is gastroschisis because she said she’s pretty sure she can see where the umbilical cord goes in and where the intestines are spilling out off to the side.  I find out tomorrow the results of the chromosome tests. If anyone else has had a similar experience, I want to hear your story!

Blood in baby's stools…anyone else experience this?

My daughter was born with gastroschisis in Sept 2008, and is nearly 5 months old. (You can see her video under birth stories. ) At 2 months old, after she came home from the NICU, she started having blood in her stools and she ended up being back in the hospital for 5 days.  They did blood labs, stool cultures, and x-rays and ruled out infection and bowel obstructions. They said they belived it was a milk protein allergy and told me to eliminate all dairy from my diet (she is breastfed exclusively).  I did that and it seemed to help for a little while but now it is returning. This is so frustrating. One doctor suggested that i stop breast feeding and give her a hypoallergic formula, but admits that they are not even sure if it is an allergy. We are returning to the GI specialist who stated that the next run of course may be an endoscopy and that they would have to sedate her during this invasive procedure. Has anyone else experienced this or has a baby with gastroschisis that required an endoscopy?  Thank you! Jaime
