Hi  I am Ayde… My son was born on October 17, 2005 at Vanderbilt Medical Center n Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. with gastroschisis… I came across this website while searching for answers as to the cause of Gastoschisis…. When i searched this at wikipedia.org , many of the contribuiting/risk factors were listed as: young mothers (I was 15 when my son was concieved), previous urinary tract infection ( I suffered from a severe UTI 3 and a half months prior to conception), and although none of the other factors pertained to me (i.e. drug use, prior std, smoking, etc.) I am  worried that I could eventually end up conceiving another child with gastrochisis…

Has anyone else had “normal” childen even after having had a baby with gastroschisis??? This has really been a depressing fact to come across because I do want to have other children, but DO NOT want to have them go through what my son has experienced in his short life…

Hi Ayde

I was born with Gastroschisis in 1975. I’m 34 now and have two healthy younger sisters. My mum did not have any problems conceiving them, or in delivering them. My mum was told all sorts about what had caused my condition from being a young unwed mother to wearing high heels!!!!! (it was 1975). She was also told that I would be able to have children of my own. However, i have 2 prefect children, both healthy.

I just had my second child a month ago. My first had gastroschisis, but the second was as “normal” as can be!

I was born with gastroschisis in 1990 and I have a sister who is younger then me, My mom was worried she would have it too, but she was a healthy baby. If you have another baby it should be healthy..

I was born in 1954 with gastroschisis and my mom had 9 kids I was the first and no others had an issue.
I have been healthy for alot of yrs had 3 kids of my own .I am however having trouble now as scar tissue is sticky !Bummer is I cant find a doc that will even see or treat me .The last dr said I had outlived my condition
that is hard to hear I have 6 beautiful grandkids ,and I feel this is going to get the best of me!
Guess I just need to suck it up ,I have had a longer life than ever thought,I am super active ,was a gymnist in highschool…my scar looks like a bomb hit me !…They just crammed my insides in as they thought i would not live .An assistant asked if she may massage my bowels and give me a vit c drip ….it worked I am ever so thankful! Your in my prayers !
Ya know what I do know is I used to hear the adults talking about me in the living room (cuz I was a freak back then) they would say that they expected I would live to be 5 then 12 blah blah that hurt more than anything and made me so strong…I was adopted out ,and I am thankful someone took me in
od Bless kept positive and hold um tight!

I honestly would not worry about it. As far as anyone knows gastroschisis is a rare and completely random thing. A very very small percentile of gastro parents go on and have another gastro baby. In fact I’ve only spoken or read about one person that happened to. Live your life and be happy and have more children if you so should chose! Don’t let it hold you back.
