Hi Kate,

Congratulations on your baby! Gastroschisis is rarely linked to any other abnormalities. If you are concerned, however, you can have an amniocentesis done to confirm. Most babies with gastroschisis spend 3-6 weeks in the hospital after birth, though this average varies by hospital. Our daughter spent about 3 weeks in the hospital. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at cariesearls@hotmail.com.

I wish you the best.

Hi Jodie,
What an amazingly upbeat account! My name is Charlotte and I have only recently become aware of Gastroschisis.
I write stories for women's magazines and newspapers and wondered if you would consider speaking to me about your experience?
It would serve to highlight the condition and put a lot of women at ease to read such a positive version of experiencing what would be considered quite daunting to most.
Please email me if you would be happy to discuss this further at:
features@charlysnewsangels.co.uk

Likewise any other UK based people who may be interested in sharing their experiences, please get in touch.

All the best,

Charlotte (Dalton)

Congratulations on your little one!

I am sorry to hear that your baby has gastroschisis. I know how very difficult it can be to hear that. It is scary and it is normal to be concerned. In fact, I remained worried from the 12 week scan where we learned our daughter had gastroschisis until the moment we brought her home after nearly 4 weeks in the hospital.

As you already know, the vast majority of these babies do very well and grow into healthy children. I know that does little to ease your worry because of course there is a chance, however small, that there will be complications.

If you have questions or just need someone to talk to as you go through this difficult process, you can email me at cariesearls@hotmail.com. I wish you and your baby all the best. ~ Ashley

hey im 27 and was born with it. i havent had any problems other than crazy gas sometimes! i treat myself normally and the only thing i have ever done differently is drink sweet acidophilus milk because the doctors had told my mother that would be best. i was kept in the hospital incubator for 4 months and ate through a tube, but once sent home have never had a problem. i also have some crazy scars! hope that helped. dont know about you but i really enjoy reading others stories. i have never met another person with this either.

hi im 27 and was bought my first bikini a few years ago. i was terrified because i had always been self concsious about my scar and my stomach in general. but it honestly was invigorating! sure a few people looked and one kid even asked me about it. i just explained that i was born with my intestines on the outside and they had to put them back and sew it up! he thought it was cool after that! i understand how it feels to feel different, but you should try to take pride in your body! you are so special because of that! i have this dorky thing i say all the time to people arguing over an opinion: opinions are like bellybuttons, everybody's got one...except me!

i was born in 1983 so i am a couple years younger, but i have a 5 inch scar that goes from where my belly button should have been, up. also to the left there is a very deep feeding tube scar. i have always been self conscious of this. in my early twenties i was more self confident than ever and bought my first two piece bathing suit. now i have gained quite a lot of weight for me and feel just gross about my stomach. the scar makes my rib cage look protruding. even though i was always willing as a child to show off how special i was, i was still self conscious. now i dont even want to show anyone. i suppose i should just get healthy! either way it was nice to hear these stories. i should look on this site more often.

Hi Claire,
Congratulations! I am sorry to hear that your baby.
My 18 month old daughter, Emma, was also born with gastroschisis. She spent under 4 weeks in the hospital and is now a completely normal little girl with a precious belly button. That being said, I know how very difficult it is to receive this kind of news and I am sure that you are very worried about the well-being of your little one. If you ever have any specific questions or would just like to vent, please feel free to email me anytime at cariesearls@hotmail.com. We also kept a blog about Emma's first few months. If you are interested the URL is http://babyonboard-dh.blogspot.com/.

I wish you and your baby the very best.
Sincerely,
Ashley
