I am currently 23 weeks pregnant and was told at 17 weeks that my daughter had gastroschisis and was referred to nottingham hospital, i was wondering if anyone else has got any experiance with this hospital and how they dealt with your pregnancy, also i was wondering if anyone could tell me how long it is before the mother is discharged from hospital and the baby still in there as this is a major worry of mine as i live an hours drive away from the hospital but do not drive myself.

any advice appreciated

Hi Kimberley, glad you stopped by, i was looking for more useful tools to add to the site and there was a hospital locator i was looking at a while back then completely forgot all about it until your post reminded me :) The Hospital Locator that i have just added will help you find out more information about the Nottingham Hospital you need more info for. I have personally not experienced this hospital but if i recall i think a few of our members have.

Try the hospital search (it provides links to 5 Nottingham Hospitals) and click on the one you will be staying at.

Kimberley, are you booked in to the QMC in Nottingham? if so we had our daughter there over 6 years ago with gastroschisis and my partner had a c-section because they decided to deliver just over 4 weeks early because of a complication. They let her stay in a side ward after the first night (they may well keep you on a general maternity ward the first night as it is easier for the staff to keeps obs etc but isn’t very good for the mother as there’s no baby at the end of the bed as they are in neonatal. They let my partner out after a week, our daughter stayed there for just under nine weeks, mostly in high dependency because of problems that she eventually got over. I went in every day after the birth to do the cares, the staff in neonatal encourage family to go in and take cae of the baby, changing nappies, feeding when possible etc and once my partner was well enough she went in with me. They have a parents room with drink making facilities and a tv as well as a couple of bedrooms they let you stay in a day or so before they discharge the baby. If you have any concerns please do not be afraid to ask either the staff at the hospital dealing with you or your local medical staff at the surgery etc – the three of us hope it all goes as well as it can and we wish you well.

hi my daughter was born with gastroschisis 14 yrs ago at the university hospital wales cardiff. We live in Barry vale of glamorgan she was born 8 wks early by emergency c section due to premature labour. She was operated on within an hour of being born and spent 5wks in the neo-natal unit. After a few months i noticed she had trouble passing bowel movements and the doctor gave her lactulos that helped. Growing up she was self concious of her scar and was told that she could have plastic surgery when she was older to give her a belly button as most gastro babies dont have one. She is now going for consultation for surgery not to recreate a belly button but to separate the scar tissue from her stomach muscle. Last year she started complaining that when she stretched and was playing some sports in school her stomach pulled and hurt. We went to the doctor whom referred her back the hospital and she is now waiting for consultation next mth before they operate. They said she will have three surgeries the first will be to take the top layer of skin off, then the second to release the muscle and the third to tidy up the scar and create a belly button if you would like i can give you my number if you would rather talk than type.
