Hello world!
I’m Olivia Lillian and I am a gastroschisis survivor. I’m here to share my story and meet other people who have experienced the same thing. It’s nice to hear other people’s story and know I’m not the only one.
I’m currently waiting for my medical records from my birth, but so far I will share what I currently know
I was born on January 31, 1990, about 2-3 months before my due date. My mother was 22 and my father was 33, and I’m their first child. I had found out that they didn’t know until my mother had an ultrasound and the doctors could not see me at all. They had to do an emergency C-Section and lo and behold I was born with my intestines outside my body. I was a mere 3-4 pounds. Right away the doctors said there was no hope or any point in trying to save me with the condition I was in. My father became so enraged he screamed at the whole hospital to “save my kid, fix my kid!” The doctors scrambled and tried to do what they could. Thank goodness I spent 3-4 months in the hospital with doctors doing all they could to save my life. My intestines were put into a sack that was held up high so my organs could slowly go back into my body. My whole face was covered with a breathing mask, and I had needles all over my body. I also had a feeding tube inserted right next to where my scar is on the lower left side. Also, from my understanding I was put on a variety of medication which damaged my hearing. I suffer from sensorineural hearing loss which impaired my speech as well.
While I was in the hospital, my parents had gotten married on March 3, 1990. After I got out, my father had to rush back to work to help pay bills and care for me. Unfortunately my mother did not properly care for me and I endured more illnesses. I later found out that my mother had been abusing alcohol and a variety of drugs during her pregnancy with me. Less than a year later my dad took me and raised me as a single parent doing all he could in his power to make sure I could be healthy.
Unfortunately, 21 years later and I have been in pain and discomfort for years! My scar has shrunk to about 3-4 inches but is very deep and very hard. I constantly have cramping, stabbing, and a pinched nerve feeling in my scar area. Most of the time the pain is so bad it puts me in the fetal position in tears. In even rarer cases, the pain radiates from my stomach/chest to as far as my left shoulder, down my left arm. I have been in and out of many different doctors and hospitals yet no one can properly diagnose me with ANYTHING. Although each doctor has seen and felt my scar and scratched their heads at my condition, I can’t even get sent to a specialist. It’s hard to explain my condition and birth to doctors especially if they have never heard of it. It’s hard to eat, have bowel movement, pass gas, exercise, or anything to do with my stomach area. I have tried to change my diet, take vitamins, stay in shape, yet nothing improves my pain and discomfort.
I am wondering if the scar tissue could be causing not only pain, but other issues in my stomach. I know I don’t have a complete bowel obstruction because I can go “potty” sometimes. But I could go days without a bowel movement and sometimes if food is trying to pass through I get pain like a pinched nerve right where my intestines are. I have no explanation for when the pain radiates up my chest, to my left shoulder and arm but it has happened multiple times, and almost feels like a panic/heart attack. I even have unstable angina symptoms when that happens. I also don’t know if I can get pregnant or even be healthy enough to eventually have a child or more.
I wish there was SOME way I could get a diagnosis and proceed with some sort of treatment. This is severely affecting the quality of my life in ALL aspects from daily life to my work life.
I live in Seattle, Washington, USA and was born at Loma Linda Hospital in Loma Linda, California, USA.
On a brighter note, I was born an artist (no not another starving one
). A jack of all trades, a master at nothing type of artist. I love creating jewelry, working with clay, drawing, painting, photography, making movies! I also love to experiment with other things I wouldn’t normally do. I was fluent in sign language but sadly forgot a lot after moving across the country from New York, NY, USA to Seattle, WA, USA.
Overall I feel like a strong person and I’m glad to be alive. I intend to do something productive and positive with it and I hope that I can help people in some way. It’s good to know that I’m not alone and there are people I can talk to, and people can talk to me as well ![]()

Hey Olivia
I am a year older than you and in the past couple years I have started feeling the same type of sensations in my scar (it is very hard, stings, etc.).
It started out at the bottom of my scar and only happened when I had my period, it has since then progressed to include all of my scar and it is stiff all the time and there is a slight discomfort most of the time and downright painful when I am bloated or on my period.
I went to see a doctor when it first happened two years ago but by the time I got an appointment the stiffness had gone away. I finally went back to the doctor today and the doctor wasn’t sure what this is but suggested that it may be adhesion. She also suggested some none gastroschisis related reason but given how local it is to my scar and how similar your symptoms sound to mine I find unlikely that it is something not related.
I have a ct scan scheduled later this month and am hoping that will reveal what is going on because this just gets worse. If I get a diagnosis I will post it here.
I hope you feel better
Edda
Hi Edda!
I hope all goes well with you, it was very hard trying to get information about my issues. I actually had to go see a surgeon FIRST before anyone else. General doctors had no idea what to do with me or where to send me. I just had my CT done and the results were:
Malrotation, basically everything in my stomach is twisted! My appendix and colon are actually somewhere on the left side of my stomach than the right. No signs of cancer or anything extreme. Surgery needed to get rid of current scar tissue and release scar tissue from organs. Lot of things we still don’t know until they go in :/ Hope surgery will help at least some of my issues, then go to gastroenterologist to check for diseases/conditions/illness, etc;
They suggested that I go in for surgery (explorative) so they can see where exactly my colon and intestines are. It is known that my scar tissue is attached in multiple areas but they have to be extremely cautious as to not cut into the colon or intestines. They could fix it if they did but more likely to get infected or leak.
Keep me updated! I’m hoping they find SOMETHING!

Hey Olivia..
) .. Was never right after op, we just put it down to the surgery. We were in & out of hospital for a year, all the X-rays were showing each time was either her bowel had twisted or her belly was full of gas.. We never got any answers as the doctors were so puzzled themselves! .. until last week, 01-02-2012.. Rushed down hospital again, pain was soooooo bad!! X-ray just showed lots of gas & her bowel was swollen.. The first 2 days were an absolute NIGHHTMARE!!! They didn’t want to operate unless they really had to & because nothing bad was showing up on the X-ray they didn’t want to open her up for no reason.. She was screaming almost none stop for 2 days before they operated! We kept begging for Morphine as we new from past experience that that would help with the pain but they were reluctant to give it to her as that slows the bowels down which they didn’t want.. They finally operated on the 3rd, was so horrible seeing her being put to sleep yet again! Surgeon said there was a large Band (adhesion) chocking her bowel which he thinks had been there for a while but didn’t show up on X-ray as her bowel had grown around the adhesion so didn’t show up! He also removed her appendices so there’s more room in her belly now & also put her bowels back in the right place as they have always been in the wrong place.. It has been a week since the surgery & WOW what a difference!! She’s eating, pooing walking around with no pain what so ever!! .. As you may know she will have to live with this for the rest of her life as more surgery means more risk of adhesions but me & my partner are so positive this time as the surgeon did so much more than the last one… I hope that our story has helped you in some way..
x
So sorry to hear that you have had to live with these pains all these years .. I have just read your story & thought I’d reply with mine.. We have just come out of Hospital for the 3rd time with my little Princess Shanelle.. She was born on the 17-07-2006 with Gastroschisis, had surgery at 4 hours old.. We had no problems up until the 21-12-2010 when she was rushed to hospital with very very bad pains in her stomach.. An X-ray revealed that she had 2 band adhesions completely chocking her bowel.. She was rushed to Great Ormond Street hospital (which was a 3 hour journey away) to have an emergency Op.. Had a very slow recovery, was in hospital for almost 3 weeks (over Christmas
