Gastroschisis

(gas.tros.chi.sis) Support and Resources

I am 20 years old and i have a one year old daughter who doesn’t have any health problems and now i am now facing having a child with this birth defect.

I am deeply saddened and i dont know what to do……..I am thinking about teminating my preganancy although I dont believe in terminations. I cant stand to see my child going through any kind of pain I am reaching out because I dont know what to do………………………

  1. kandi Said,

i so feel for what you are going through. just to give you a little hope, my son aden was born with gastroschisis and is now 6 monhs old. he…..we have been through it all, from severe reflux, to a hiatal hernia, to extreeme feeding issues, to liver damage due to 7 weeks on TPN, all the way to the constant fight with doctors and surgeons. i too considered termination, but when i found that these babies have up to a 95% survival rate i knew i was in for the long haul. i understand you have to do what is best for you and your family, but know that you can get through this. no matter what the outcome. mothers are the strongest people in the world. aden now has concuered everything life has handed him and is the love of my life. he is healthy, strong and at 5 months was able to sit on his own and now at 6 months is crawling and has his first tooth. he is eating like a pro and in the 50th percentile on weight and the 75th for height. my pediatrition calls him a true miracle. trust me, it is the hardest thing on earth to watch your child hurt, but it can be so worth it in the long run.

my baby bethany has had a nightmare of a time and me and bethanys dad did think about terminating the prenancy but we didnt as we were told how easy it can be to sort in 95% of these cases, being in hospital 9 months we saw so many gastroschisis being born staying 3-6 weeks and going home fine we just were the unlucky ones bethany needs a liver bowl transplant and has been given 3-6 months to live so it can be really easy!! or hard id stick with it cus even though beths been through so much she smiles and laughs everyday!! and i wouldnt change it for the world!!!

Hiya. I just read your story about your daughter, Bethany. It really touched me as yes, Bethany did go throh so much, what an inspirational little girl. What is the plan of action reguarding treatment? my daughter, Stephanie, will be 12 next month. when she was born, i was nearly 17. I was told at the 16 week scan she had Gastroschisis and that she would more than likely be born stillborn, but i decided to go ahead and what will be will be. It wasnt easy, she was a low birth weight and was rushed into surgery. she was on a ventilator and had drips and wires everywhere. She was also sedated. After 2 to 3 days, she was taken off sedation, which was bittersweet. I could bond with my baby but knew she was in pain and hungry..she was fed through a tube. I held her for the first time aged 1 week. She started feeding from a bottle. She wasnt allowed home until she opened her bowels. Finally, steph came home at 3 weeks. She doesnt have a belly button, but has been fine ever since. She is happy to see this website and tells me to wish you, your partner and Bethany her love and support. Everyone on this website knows exactly what you are going through so we are here if you need us. Big hugs…Sherry and Stephanie
