scar reconstruction helpp!!

Hi my names jessica, im 18, and i was born with gastroschisis on jusy 5th 1992..as most people on here i dont have a bellybutton and also have a scar. although my scar is not as sevear as some on here- its about 2-3 inches where a vertical where a normal bellybutton would be- its really getting me down and my ultimate dream is for surgery to get a normal belly button. i dont even know where to start, i dont want to make it worse, i just want it to look more normal, i dont even want to go on holiday right now, the thought of wearing a 2 peice makes me feel sick. is there anyone thats had it done in the uk? or knows how i can go about getting it done, my feelings about my scar are getting worse as i get older and i just want to do something. plz help

Hi Jessica, my name is Kori and I am a 20 year old survivor of gastroschisis. I have found myself in the same predicament that you are in… to get surgery to get a “normal” belly button or not. My advice it not to touch anything. I have heard of so many horror stories of the surgery ending up making the condition worse and causing the people more trouble afterwards than they had before. You are lucky though that you only have a 2-3 inch scar. My scar runs from my chest cavity down to the middle of my pelvic bone. Since I was little, my mom put my in one piece bathing suits to try and save me from other people starring or glancing. As I got older I became more and more aware that I was quite different than all my friends. When I finally told a few of my friends, they surprisingly accepted it (as true friends should). Overall, my advice is to embrace your scar and not be afraid of wearing a bikini. I go the the beach every summer in a two piece and people stare, but who cares. You are unique and alive living a healthy life, and thats all that matters. And a little side note, some of the guys I am friends with think it is sexy/cool. =]
