what’s your story?

My name Is chelsey, I am 19 years old.
I was born with gastroschisis and have never met or talked to anyone else that was born with the same thing. I’ve never seen any baby pictures of myself when I was born because everything got stolen. I have a huge scar from my hip straight up to below my chest. I’m very self conscious about it. and people have mentioned constructive surgery but I just don’t feel like that would help; just cause more scaring. Also I wanted know if I was able to have children. I’ve asked numerous doctors but have received many different answers. And I’m still curious. Also, I was curious about others stories on how they were born.

About chelsey0827

My name is chelsey. I'm 19 years old and was born with gastroschisis. I have a scar straight down to my hip all the way up to below my chest. I have no bellybutton as well. I don't have any health problems because of gastroschisis but I still am curious to if I can get pregnant or not. Still a mystery I suppose. I haven't ever met anyone with the same thing ad me nor have I talked to anyone with gastroschisis. I'm interested in getting to know and hear others stories.

My name is Kasey and I was born 3 months premature with Gastroschisis 29 years ago. I had reconstructive surgery when I was 18. I have since had 2 beautiful healthy children. I am also in nursing school and have learned alot about this in my life. As to whether you can have children, you would have to speak to your doctor. You may need a CT scan just to be sure of the placement of your vital organs. I know there are many others that were born with this that have had children. I too have always been self concious of my scar. This is something you will have to work on to become comfortable with. I just tell everyone it is my battle scar, that I fought the battle to live and I WON!! Good Luck!!

My name is Sara and I’m also born with gastroschisis.
I’m from Sweden and I have never met or talked to someone with the same ”problem” that I have. I have big complex for my stomach when I have no belly button. I really think it’s really hard to be a girl with such “problems” when there is a idial for how young girls should look like today, I really hope that we could be in contact in some way and share experiences with each other:)!
If you want to write sometime my email is ; sfson@live.se
    Best wishes, Sara.

I am 21 years old and was born with Gastroschisis and have a large scar that reaches from where my navel would be up to my bottom rib. I know very little of what really happened when I was born do to being adopted. I have also felt insecure about my scar since i was young, only recently have I been willing to go to the pool in a bikini top or anything that shows my stomach. I also worry about the ability to carry children since it feels like my scar is connected to my stomach muscle. be cause of my scar if I try to stretch backwards it feels like my skin is being pulled. I am hope I can talk to others that have similar problems.

HI, My youngest son was born with Gastroschisis in 1967, he was the first child to survive this and was featured in The Lancet . When he was born I was not allowed to see him till he was 6 weeks old and not told if he was to survive till he was 3 months, he was born Nov 30th and when I saw him first he looked like a little skinned rabbit, blue with tubes into his head and ankles but all the medical staff said he was a real fighter, he was given a complete blood transfusion at one point and was to have another but the Hong Kong Flu intervened and there were not enough staff available to do another, I think another one might have weakened him.  He started with a piece of plastic covering his tum then this was swapped with  another covering, not a skin graft I dont know what was used but it was clipped to his stomach and grew in?????????He finally came home and we watched in fascination when over the next few months veins grew across the almost see thru patch, we could see his intestines moving about, cant remember which grew first but there were blue ones and red ones then gradually the space thickened and went opaque as flesh grew across as well, had no idea this could happen. He loved playing out in the garden with no clothes on as a todler and as he tanned everything changed co.lour except the clip marks, he looked like he had the imprint of a large flower on his tum At age 5 he was given reconstructive surgery which was very basic his scar was very twisted and thickened and goes from top to bottom almost of his chest/abdomen.  They tried to make him a navel but only managed a bridge of skin which as he got older he would push nails under telling his school mates he was pushing them thru his skin……think hes stopped doing that now :-) .  HIs scar has never bothered him, he grew up to be 6′ tall fit as a fiddle. I will never forget the wonderful staff at the East Birmingham Hospital (as it was).
